3D Printing & Rapid Prototyping

FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling)

FDM printing is ideal for functional prototypes, fixtures, and quick-turn parts where strength, size, and speed matter.

Typical uses:

  • Fit-check and functional prototypes
  • Brackets, mounts, and enclosures
  • Jigs, fixtures, and shop aids
  • Iterative design revisions

Common materials:

  • PLA (concept & early prototypes)
  • PETG (durable functional parts)
  • ABS (impact-resistant components)
  • Nylon & reinforced filaments (application-dependent)
  • TPU (flexible parts – limited applications)

Resin Printing (SLA / MSLA)

Resin printing is used for high-detail, high-finish prototypes where surface quality, fine features, and dimensional accuracy are critical.

Typical uses:

  • High-detail prototype parts
  • Presentation and customer-facing models
  • Small, intricate components
  • Parts requiring smooth surfaces or fine text/features

Advantages:

  • Superior surface finish
  • Fine detail and sharp edges
  • Tight feature resolution compared to FDM

(Resin parts are typically best suited for prototype and evaluation use rather than heavy mechanical loading.)

Typical Parts

  • Enclosures & housings
  • Brackets & mounts
  • Assembly fixtures & alignment tools
  • High-detail prototype components
  • Concept and presentation models

How We Work

We work directly from customer CAD models and can assist with basic design-for-printability guidance when needed. Many customers use 3D printing as a first step before CNC machining, reducing risk and development time.

  • File review & technology selection (FDM vs resin)
  • Material and orientation optimization
  • Printing & post-processing
  • Fit check, iteration, or delivery

Why 3D Print With RPFAB

  • Fast turnaround for early-stage designs
  • Both functional and high-detail prototype options
  • Engineering-driven decision making
  • Seamless transition from printed prototype to CNC machining
  • Small-shop responsiveness and clear communication
